Various Schools – ‘Fabric First’ Decarbonisation Schemes to SCOLA Buildings
- Client: Various Hampshire Academies and Hampshire County Council
- Location: Hampshire
- Role: Building Surveyor, Architecture, Principal Designer, Quantity Surveyor, Contract Administrator
Hampshire has over 200 SCOLA system school buildings in their school estate. These systems were rolled out in the 1960s/70s as the quickest and best value option to meet the exceptional demand for school places caused by the post-war baby boom. By design, they were intended as a short-term measure, with a life span of 30 years which had far been exceeded. Their inherently lightweight construction and large expanses of glazing resulted in deplorable environmental conditions.
We were challenged to design and deliver recladding and refurbishment projects to increase their environmental performance and extend their lifespans.
We would need an agile 1 Team delivery to meet the fast-track programmes whilst allowing the schools and, in some cases, the buildings in question to remain in use.
The projects are the epitome of retrofit in a live school environment. Creating high-performance, energy-efficient spaces with an innovative fabric-first approach and supporting the education of future generations in a sustainable way.
