University of Bristol - Extension and Refurbishment of Engineering

Built in the 1950s, the Queen's Building is a prominent landmark in Bristol's Tyndall's Park conservation area. As one of the University's leading research and development sites, the building was being fully utilised and provided little space to grow. A predicted increase in student and post-graduate research numbers required an additional 1800m2 of space.

We led the architectural design to extend the building alongside the modernisation of the existing facilities. The building now accommodates a large, reconfigurable flexible teaching area, an adaptable undergraduate laboratory for heavy engineering work, an open-plan office space, student meeting areas and research offices. A new entrance to the latest teaching spaces has been created directly from Woodland Road, as well as new external landscaping and an accessible external roof terrace.

We achieved BREEAM Excellent certification, surpassing the local authority's requirement to achieve Very Good and contributing to the University's commitment to Net Zero aspirations.
