We were appointed to design a new building, on the site of the Great Western Hospital, to provide inpatient, outpatient and community services for older adults with mental health problems.
All 26 patient rooms have private views of the gardens and are arranged in single-storey cloisters, enclosing landscaped courtyards. This allows patients to take leisurely strolls in a safe and familiar environment and provides secure and therapeutic garden spaces.
A two-storey section, to the front of the building, houses the outpatient department, the community mental health team base and a range of therapy and clinic rooms. This higher part also screens the inpatient ward from the busy hospital campus.
The building is clad with coloured render, cast stone and timber and has generous glazing to provide natural light and ventilation.
